日常の特許：A Shopping Trolley That Made Me Pause

 It’s always fun to do grocery shopping in other countries.

Maybe it’s a millennial habit, but I enjoy noticing the small differences — unfamiliar brands, different layouts, and everyday items that quietly reflect another way of living.

When I went back to Malaysia last month, that curiosity led me to AEON. And that’s where I was genuinely surprised to see a special shopping trolley — one with a screen and a scanner attached — making it feel as if Malaysia was suddenly living in a different, future generation.

As I shopped, I scanned items directly on the trolley. The price appeared instantly on the screen. There was no need to unload everything again at the checkout, and no long queue to manage while keeping an eye on my child. The experience felt unexpectedly calm and smooth.

Out of curiosity, I later looked into how such self-checkout trolleys are typically designed. One example from Japan is a system known as a “Cart POS”, described in JP2020177589A / JP7193411B2 (“カートPOSおよびプログラム”), assigned to Toshiba Tec Corporation. The patent outlines a shopping cart equipped with a tablet-style terminal, a barcode scanner, and a dedicated power setup — showing how much thought can go into making everyday shopping more efficient.

Whether or not the AEON trolley I used is based on this specific patent, the experience reminded me of something important. Good technology doesn’t need to announce itself. When design is done well, it quietly supports daily life.

海外でスーパーに行くのは、いつも楽しいものです。
もしかするとミレニアル世代らしい感覚かもしれませんが、見慣れない商品や陳列、日常品のちょっとした違いに、その国らしい暮らし方が表れている気がして、つい観察してしまいます。

先月、マレーシアに戻ったときも、そんな気持ちでAEONに立ち寄りました。そこで目にしたのが、画面とスキャナーが付いた少し特別なショッピングカートです。その瞬間、マレーシアがふと「一つ先の未来」を生きているように感じました。

買い物をしながら商品をスキャンすると、価格がすぐ画面に表示されます。レジで商品をもう一度出す必要もなく、子どもに気を配りながら長い列に並ぶこともありません。想像以上に、落ち着いた買い物体験でした。

後になって調べてみると、このようなセルフチェックアウト型のカートは、日本では「カートPOS」と呼ばれる仕組みとして知られています。その一例が、JP2020177589A / JP7193411B2「カートPOSおよびプログラム」（東芝テック株式会社）です。タブレット端末、バーコードスキャナー、専用電源を備えたショッピングカートの構成が記載されており、日常の買い物をよりスムーズにするための工夫が感じられます。

AEONで使ったカートが、この特許に基づいているかどうかは分かりません。ただ、強く印象に残ったのは、技術がとても自然に日常に溶け込んでいたことです。

我無法確定 AEON 使用的推車是否與這項專利有直接關聯。但那次體驗讓我深刻感受到一件事：真正好的科技，不需要刻意被看見。當設計做得恰到好處，它會自然地融入生活。
